Matoi comes to live with her father at the beginning of the series long after the mysterious disappearance of her mother. She hopes to live out her days as a normal girl.

Her plans are interrupted however when a being from a higher dimension (also known as a god) becomes attached to her whilst she works at her uncle's shrine, allowing her to transform using a process known as "Divine Union."
